What is Live2D Cubism?

Live2D Cubism 3 is a software tool for creating animation from a single static 2D illustration. Parts of an illustration can be deformed individually and collectively. Deformed sates can be registered as keyforms and interpolated, allowing you to create animation without having to draw in-betweens.

With Cubism 3, unlike other simplified 2D animation or 3D modeling methods, you can use a very original artwork and directly animate it with every detail kept intact and without any compromise.

Integrated Workflow

All you need to start working with Cubism 3 is an illustration in a PSD format.
A PSD file can be directly imported into Cubism 3 with all of its layers and be instantly ready for modeling.

After the initial setup, you can go right into modeling and animating your character. Model and animation can be exported as a video or used interactively for games, apps, and other applications using Cubism SDK.

Artmesh

Cubism 3 automatically creates an Artmesh by mapping out polygons for each layer of imported PSD.
Artmesh can be deformed individually and collectively to register a keyform and be animated into another registered keyform. The deformation has no effect on the quality of original illustration such as colors and strokes. Smoothness of deformation can be modified on demand by changing polygon density of Artmesh.

Various Deformation Tools

Cubism 3 is equipped with a variety of Deformers, the tools for deforming Artmesh. Switch and combine these powerful tools, and you can animate your character as freely as your imagination allows.

Path Deformer

Path Deformer is primarily used where dynamic movement is needed like hair or opening/closing of mouth. Whether you want to deform dynamically or subtly, Path Deformer can easily be controlled to match specific requirements.

Warp Deformer

Warp Deformer is useful when deforming surface of Artmesh to add depth expression. The power of Warp Deformer is particularly enjoyed when nested in hierarchy, where each Warp Deformer is affected by its underlying (parent) Warp Deformers. This makes the modeling process exponentially efficient that could otherwise be extremely tedious.

Rotation Deformer

Rotation Deformer can rotate Artmesh around axis and make joints to pose a character. Like Warp Deformer, Rotation Deformer can be nested in hierarchy. When combined with Glue (to be explained later), it allows you to create bone-like animation.

5 Animation Curves

Animator is used to animate your character on a timeline using registered keyforms (Motion Parameters). 5 types of animation curves are available; "smooth bezier", "bezier", "linear", "step", and "inverse step”. When used correctly, you can produce natural and realistic animation effectively and efficiently.

Physics

Physics can be applied for wavy and pendular motions, such as hair and cloth swaying in a wind. In Cubism 3, you can visually set physics properties and instantly check how they appear to produce desired animation.

Glue

Glue connects two separate Artmesh and automatically maintain the joint while one of the Artmesh is being deformed or moved, without you having to manually edit Deformers and Artmesh. This tool can be a huge time-saver when producing bone-like animation.

Seamless Workflow

In Cubism 3, you can model a character, set up motions, and preview resulting animation all in one integrated workspace without having to switch applications. This greatly increases productivity as it allows you to easily optimize a model for animation and vice-versa.

Templates

With Templates, you can apply Artmesh structures and keyforms (Motion Parameters) of an existing model to a new model. It copies the range of movements and expressions of a template model to a target model. You can make adjustments after a template has been applied. This makes it easier to reproduce similar models and iterated versions in quantity.

Lipsync

You can automatically create mouth animation by linking mouth to audio input. How big or fast mouth should be animated can be configured. This function is particularly useful for conversational scenes.
